Lunch was at Carl's Jr., on the theory they have wi-fi. My phone worked fine, but the ultrabook refused to find the gateway to the Internet. It was able to connect to the router, but not beyond. So I read more of Water For Elephants, which continues to fascinate me. what a splendid piece of writing!
Took the laptop into work, got onto the guest wi-fi network, and it worked fine. So it was Carl's and not the new ultrabook at fault. Nice to know. Right now I'm at Starbucks, no problem getting on the network here either.
After work I headed to Microcenter, to buy a bigger Solid State Drive (SSD) for this thing, and ended up also buying one for the netbook. I think I'll practice on the netbook first. I also bought some copy software, and maybe this weekend will try it out. It's a roundabout process:
- install the copy software on the machine
- copy to a backup drive (like my 1Tb network drive)
- replace the drive with the new SSD
- restore from the backup drive to the SSD
The netbook has a regular HDD, an SSD will make it even more portable, and extend th battery life while making it faster too. The Ultrabook has a 128 GB drive, it's already half full, the new drive is 240GB.
Also bought a card reader which says it is compatible with Linux. Still trying to fix the CF card at work.
And there was something else, too. Or was there? Maybe not. Oh yeah, a netbook sized USB wireless N adapter, just in case the problem at Carl's was the ultrabook after all.
Plans for tomorrow:
