That lasted till about noon, time for chicken soup. Spent most of the 2 hours before the Roku phone interview exploring the Roku, finding some free stuff, being annoyed that most of the free stuff comes with non-skippable ads, and being disappointed with some of the video quality. A major WTF is the wi-fi card only supports up to 2.5GHz 802.11n, a 4K device ought to go up one more notch to 5GHz 802.11ac. Way too much buffering on some channels. Nice to have the NASA channel for free (Comcast does not provide this) but the Mercury transit show was such low resolution that you couldn't make out the NASA logo on the graphics. So I provided my own.
The phone rang at 3, as scheduled, but I could not hear anyone. Another call in 2 minutes, this time I could hear. Hiring manager has a very thick subcontinent accent, and sometimes his questions were difficult to understand. It didn't help that he was on a delay of some kind. I'm going to guess they use Skype phone, which would account for the no audio the first try.
During the course of the interview, he revealed he has talked to everyone else on my team who was laid off, and he actually hired one person who had not been laid off but had to escape. Good guy, ran IT for the lab. He was at the housewarming yesterday. I don't know how many openings they have, but it looks like I'm competing with my friends. He said he will talk with IT Guy about me,and I also gave him the name of a former 2x boss who is now a big marketing deal there.
Their plan is to bring people in to meet the team, and hire someone within 2 weeks. I did not get any sense of whether I was a finalist.
With such an ambiguous result, I emailed the hearing aide recruiter in SSF and let her know I would be coming in tomorrow.
That done, I got dressed and brought in the garbage bins and the mail, checked the tomato and bean plants. Took the tablet out onto the porch and read some more of The Nightingale which is finally picking up steam.
Trimmed the roses, lots of deadheads. Also cut back - way back - two non-producing rose bushes. Also finished a project from before the vacation, which involved pulling each little rock out of the dirt in the thingie which sits under the Thai lime tree pot, washing out the thingie, replacing the rocks, filling it with water and setting the pot on top again. And watering both lime trees.
Dinner was Marie Calendar pot roast dinner, which I will not be buying again because they have gone to using more potato than anything else. Mango popsicle for dessert.
Watched some Skynews on the Roku, this is one of the more popular news sources in the EU/UK. Good content, but lots of buffering and meh video quality.
Poked at Shark Tank, but they want $2 an episode. Linked my Youtube account, but again very low resolution videos. There was something else which was free but I had to sign up for it, can't remember what it was. Maybe a network news feed.
Going to take drugs and go to bed early.
Plans for tomorrow:
Morning drive to SSF.
I should bring my laptop, maybe park at a Starbucks on the way back.
