Who is To Blame?

I'm against the government giving money to Wall Street's greedy fat cats. But-

Anyone who bought a home on a balloon payment plan has only themselves to blame if the payments grew to exceed what they could afford to pay. They were gambling on future salary increases which in most cases were well beyond what could be reasonably expected. It has been decades since most people could expect more than a cost of living increase, and most real income has been flat or has declined.

Damned Grammar!

I'm just posting this to show how AR I am about English. You know how people who swear usually swear at innocent, often inanimate objects while they are trying to cuss out someone? For example:

Shut off the effing TV, get out of the effing chair, climb the effing stairs and clean up your effing room and make your effing bed!

Technically, the chair, stairs, room and bed are innocent (the TV not so much) and grammatically have no reason  to be cussed at.

But I guess that's the difference between good grammar and poetry.

League of Howeird Voters Recommendations

There are a lot of ballot measures in CA this year, and while I am undecided on the Presidential election, I am very decided on the statewide issues. Here is the official recommendation on those from the League of Howeird Voters:

Proposition 1 :
SB 1856 Safe, Reliable High-Speed Passenger Train Bond Act for the 21st Century.
Yes! And if a ballot comes up to add the Altamont Pass route to the plan, vote for that too.

Proposition 2 :
1274. Treatment of Farm Animals. Statute.
No. Creates a bloated bureaucracy.

Proposition 3 :
Children’s Hospital Bond Act. Grant Program. Statute.
No.  20% earmarked to UC? Wrong!

Proposition 4 :
1287. Waiting Period and Parental Notification Before Termination of Minor’s Pregnancy. Constitutional Amendment.
No! Just say no.

Proposition 5:
Nonviolent Offenders. Sentencing, Parole and Rehabilitation. Statute.
No. **

Proposition 6 :
Criminal Penalties and Laws. Public Safety Funding. Statute.
No.**

Proposition 7 :
Renewable Energy. Statute.
No. Wolf in sheep's clothing.

Proposition 8 :
Limit on Marriage. Constitutional Amendment.
No. The State needs to keep out of the marriage business.

Proposition 9 :
Criminal Justice System. Victims’ Rights. Parole. Constitutional Amendment and Statute.
No.**

Proposition 10 :
Bonds. Alternative Fuel Vehicles and Renewable Energy. Statute.
No. The oil and auto companies can pay for their own R&D out of their windfall profits, thank you very much.

Proposition 11 :
Redistricting. Constitutional Amendment and Statute.
No. Too many axes are a-grinding here.

Proposition 12 :
SB 1572 (Chapter 122, 2008). Wyland.
Veterans' Bond Act of 2008.
Yes. Provides $$ for loans to vets to buy homes and farms.

For more details on these ballot measures, start by clicking here for the official CA Secretary of State's summary page.

**Most initiative measures, IMHO, are a Bad Idea™. There is almost always a hidden agenda, and it almost always will cost me more $$ if I vote "yes".

Non-anonymous comments gratefully accepted. And now a poll.

McCain and Able

Letterman caught McCain bailing on him to tape an interview with Katie C. According to Letterman, McCain said he needed to get to the airport to go to DC to fix the economy. We only have Letterman's word for this.

McCain wants to bail out of the debate, too. frankwu suggests McCain may have had a stroke (and listed several plausible symptoms) but he looked fine while they were putting on his makeup for the Couric clip.

The clip is shown at about 8:15 into the youtube video. Of course we have no way of knowing this was live or if Letterman pulled file footage for this. They are at the same network, easy for his staff to do.

Frank has a good point, though. McCain can't afford to look too weak to be Prez  until November 5. I wonder what the protocol is for RNC if McCain has to bow out for reasons of health. Does Palin move up a notch? Do they nominate one of the runners-up and keep Palin? Do they go for a whole different ticket? Anyone know?

Guarding The Feeder

Originally uploaded by how3ird.

After hauling four 20-lb. bags of kitty litter upstairs to the balcony, I was pooped, and plopped down in the chair at the far end. Domino and Pumpkin came out to join me, it was nice and breezy out there and they usually like to hang out with me. Domino likes to jump onto the litterbox cover and then to the railing, and this time she decided to lie down monorail cat style on the railing near the hummingbird feeder. As the tiny birds came around for a drink, she perked up, and went over to stand guard right under the feeder. Several hummers came by and zipped away, but a couple ignored her and perched on the feeder.

I went to get my camera, and was surprised she stayed where she was and the birds started coming back immediately.

After a while I called her over to my side of the balcony, and she came. Within a minute, there were three, four, five, six birds at the feeder.
