Spook out-spooks herself, and then...

I had nothing on  my agenda today except to go see a show at 8 pm. Stayed in bed till about 10, and once again I could not find Spook anywhere. I even jiggled the sofa.

Tried one of those Fisherman's Friend cough drops. WAY too strong, like Altoids, only moreso.

Got email from *$s reminding me I only had another 2 weeks to use my free drink credit. Used their app to remind me what locations are nearby and found the one next to the AMC cinema at Mercado. That is usually a prime eye candy spot, because most people are coming from dates to the movies.

Got there about noon, was amazed that both tables near the front which have power outlets were free. Got a venti frapuccino, set up the laptop, and attempted to do some updates. One of the things I wanted to do was download the latest firmware for the webcams, because the new HD cam was not letting me see the other cams in its GUI. But downloading was so slow, I ran speedtest to see what was going on, and the wi-fi was at a crawl. May as well not have it. So I finished the frapp and went home.

Set up the laptop in the livingroom, and spent an hour updating 7 cams. I messed up the HD one, loaded part A before part B, which turned out (reading the instructions) to make the GUI inaccessible. Had to do a hard reset, take the cam down and plug it into the router directly, and make all the settings what I wanted.

But now it all works.

Also updated Norton and Flash player. Itunes and Quicktime still want to update, but they never make any improvements with those, so it can wait.

Sometime during my outing, Spook moved to her hole in the office space. Little by little as I was working on the laptop, she came out and by the time I was done and watching the Husky football team melt down on TV, she was wandering all over the house, playing with every toy:
Stuffed banana
Cloth ball
cloth monkey
cloth octopus
Stuffed burlap square
Small white ball inside a circular track
Brush (she tried to eat the bristles)

And she let me pet her, but she still freaks when I stand up and walk toward her.

In the mail was the permit for the air conditioner. They do it backwards - after the work is done, it is inspected and the permit is issued.

7 pm, drove downtown SJ to San Pedro Square to see The Immigrant  which starred the music director from Little Shop. He got to sing a little, but mostly there were a lot of small bursts of Yiddish. It's the unlikely story of a Russian Jew who comes to a small town in Texas, pushing a wheel barrow of bananas. A Christian couple rent him a room, help him settle into town, and so on.

As a play, it sucks. Way too many scenes, most scenes took as long to set up as it did to run. Only 4 people, would have worked better with the children and maybe one of the nosy neighbors - all referred to in the script. As a story, it's pretty good. The characters have some depth, but we are often caught saying WTF? because something isn't justified by what we know. There are a couple of way too long voice-overs as the immigrant stands frozen in a spotlight while his wife, in another spotlight, mimes reading a LONG letter from him.

Worth going to to support my friend (I was in the same row with his wife & fan club) but I wouldn't recommend it.

Back home, Spook was parked on the living room window ledge, which she came down from when I played TMZ from Tivo. She sat on the carpet 3 feet from me and watched. The surround sound confused her. Eventually she got bored and played with her toys again.

So, lots of progress.

Plans for tomorrow:

Hopefully play with Spook some more. Maybe go to Starbucks and take the Nexus and just read from the Kindle app which doesn't need wifi.
See a movie?
Nah, more likely watch football at home.

November 9, 1989

This is the 25th anniversary of the start of the Berlin wall coming down. This was the day the Soviets declared they were done with the wall, and did not stop people from whacking away at it.

I was on vacation in Thailand, overnighting in a hotel at Laem Ngop (Frog Harbor) and had seen the news on TV and in the Thai language newspapers. The next morning I got onto a boat headed for Ko Chang (Elephant Island) where I had a reservation for a few days at a beach bungalow. Also on the boat were a pair of drop-dead-gorgeous German women, early 20s, world travelers. They had not seen the news, and when I told them, they were very angry that someone would play such a joke on them, and when we got to the bungalows they refused to have anything to do with me.

Until 2 days later, when the English language newspaper arrived. And then they invited me to join them on the clothing-optional beach.

Did Some Stuff, Didn't Do Some Other Stuff

Realized the 49er game was on after it was on for an hour, but I record it on Tivo and it is much better to watch later when I can FFF past the commercials and FF to mute the commentators and move things along.

So I went to the nearest 7-11, got some cash from the ATM (local CUs have a deal which makes 7-11 ATMs free), then went to get my nails done. Then next door, bought a sticky bun and a cinnamon bun from Specialty's, to go. Hate the ungrammatical name, and do not like the tast of anything lunch-like they make there, but the sticky buns are amazing. I would have bought 2, but they only had 1 left. Lots of eye candy, but I did not have my Nexus with me, and didn't want to haul out my laptop.

Home, watched the 49ers until about the 3rd quarter when they stopped playing like an NFL team and tried their best to give the game away. FFed to the final play, which was their winning field goal, and even though it was a win, it was ugly and I am not a happy fan. In fact, resigning my fandom, after four games of 2nd half no-show and repetitive misuse of Gore Up The Middle™, especially on 1st down. Even the worst teams see that coming and stuff it.

The Raiders lost again but at least they are making an effort.

Seahawks remain my home team, they showed up with the whole team for the first time in a few weeks, and dealt the NY Giants a 38-17 loss.

A theater friend I admire from when she was in TheatreWorks and Palo Alto Children's Theater, and has decided to wrap up a very successful career in Hollywood and start a business, has managed to get Andronico's snobby grocery chain to carry her organic stevia-sweetened lemonade. It was developed for kids, so is in those little boxes with the straw attached. So I took a field trip, was disappointed that it was not on display, but did find it next to some of the other lunchbox juices, and bought two 6-packs. I figured if I didn't like it (which was a strong possibility, since I don't usually like lemonade) I could gift it to the break room at work.

Home, it was dark early. I took out the trash & recyclables, and turned on Sunday Night Football. Watched the Packers destroy Da Bears. Was mildly disappointed that they didn't go for the final touchdown from the 3-yard line, but 55 points was enough to win, so no harm done.

Decided I had too much on the credit card to buy a freezer. I could use something more than the one on the bottom of the fridge. It has two shelves, which work great for frozen dinners, but the rest is a big, deep basket which sucks for organizing.

Spook stayed out of sight all day. Just as I was about to write this in the present tense, she signaled me that she was out by playing with her rather loud ball-in-the-circular-track toy. After staring at me for a bit from outside the office door, she retreated to the livingroom window sill. And now she's in the middle of the livingroom floor grooming herself, which she does a lot of when she is out, and I love it because she is a very clean kitty and that white fur sets off the other colors so well when it is clean.

In the background I am running a full backup of my RAID array to the 8TB network drive. The RAID array is where all my big files are (photos, videos, docs, spreadsheets and Pagemaker stuff). Started that at about 10 am, it's almost done. I had been doing incremental backups based on a full backup in April, but all those files made me nervous, so I redid my backup scheme to run a full backup and incrementals for two months, then start another "chain" and go back and forth with only the two current sets saved.

Plans for tomorrow:
Call my broker, cash out some of my mutual finds to pay down most of my credit card debt. This was something planned months ago to deal with the London trip, but it's also going to pay for a new camera and lens. That was almost as expensive as my hotel bill.
Team meeting
Boss' boss' group meeting
There may also be actual work to do
MNF (I am starting to miss BASFA, because I have an engagement gift for johnnyeponymous, but he often is a no-show or disappears about the time I arrive.
