Thursday theater FAIL

But first...
Too much time in meetings and interruptions, not enough testing.

Got to work on time, called AG on the way and encouraged him to tell HR how awful his boss is before his boss tells HR what a bad manager AG is, because AG is not a manager. I had this happen to me at HP and was not proactive enough and would have been fired had I not found a better job first. By way of comparison, I am not in touch with anyone I spent almost 3 years working with, but that next job I hear from Boss and two co-workers regularly.

One of the interruptions which ate a lot of time is Boss asked if the Netflix tests for 5.1 audio were playing on all 5 speakers. Turns out they weren't, so a series of tests could not be run. The same TV and A/V receiver played on all speakers when I played the same content on Netflix's customer account. And on Google Play.

Most of the tests which failed today did so because the test was bad, not because there was anything wrong with the TV.

Lunch was curried salmon, strawberries for dessert.

After lunch was a scheduled call from a recruiter in FL who had a contract job in Sunnyvale for a start-up which does cool enough stuff to want to jump ship for. Especially after this week's shenanigans. They have a really impressive web site. We hit it off well, he will submit my resume to the hiring manager. Next interview if it comes will be, ironically, over Google Hangouts. I'm not sure I'm qualified, but maybe I have enough to offer.

Two meetings at Hole 2 today. 11 am with Boss & NP to give details on failed tests, and at 5 with Boss, NP, next door lead engineer and the two visiting engineers, over Hangouts with our guy in Asia and one of the manufacturer's people there. They promised a new build Monday. Ha.

From there I went to downtown MV, parked under the theater, plugged in the car and went topside to buy a ticket, but it was only 6 and box office opens at 7. Had a snack at the theater's cafe, and watched a lot of eye candy outside. Thought I heard music in the distance, so looked online and lo and behold a block away they had the main street blocked off for summer Thursdays' street fair. The music was done but there were all sorts of displays. PD, FD, UD, swim school, stuff for kids.

Back to the box office, got the ticket without a service charge. Opening night for an obscure 2-person play. I was lured in by the music director/pianist who is one of my favorite accompanists. I thought I would know the cast, but did not. The leading lady, who is incredibly hot and can sing but not enunciate, also directed.

The synopsis was misleading, it said is was about the love life of a struggling actress who falls on hard times. It's really about a Jewish novelist who falls for a stunning non-Jewish no-talent bimbo. It would have worked better had the actor known how to play Jewish. And if the orchestra had not drowned out the actors. The show has no dialog, it's all singing and stage hands carrying on and off furniture, clothing and props. Lighting was basic, and did nothing to help focus the action.

The show begins with the final scene. Writer writes a goodbye note, sticks his wedding ring on it and leaves. Wife comes home wearing a barista apron, takes that off, finds the note and has a melt-down. HOWEVER, the play ends looking at the apartment from the other direction, wife is standing outside with an oversized coffee cup, wearing a nightgown. Totally destroys the effect.

It was a FAIL for me because I couldn't make out most of the words, it was mis-cast and the chronology was jagged. The good news is the profits go in part to charity.

Home, chopped liver sandwich & cole slaw, the last of the butter pecan ice cream for dessert. Watched PTI.

Delivered was a 6-month supply of syringes, and two bottles of a med I was about to run out of. And a box of small box cutters.

Plans for tomorrow:
Maybe home, maybe a manicure
Vote for the Hugo awards

Winding Down Day

Out of the house later than I wanted but still at work by 9.

Ran a bunch of tests which check whether a Netflix customer can sneak in under the tent, and I think they all passed.  Then re-ran the FAILed tests and worked with the visiting engineers on the 5.1 audio glitch. I'm not sure they understood that their TV doesn't feed the test app the right information until settings have been set correctly and the machine restarted. Until that happens the test won't run at all.

No trips to Hole 2. Didn't hear a word from NP or Boss except in email I was CC'ed in.

Lunch was beef bulgogi and cantaloupe slices. Had to dodge an intern of east Indian extraction who had  brought her parents, who were very out of place. Mom's sari was impressive. Trying not to imagine tiny skinny girl growing to the size of her mother.

Plowing through Lester Del Rey's entry in the retro Hugos. All the retros came in unreadable PDFs, I converted them to mobi for kindle, but this one totally messed up the formatting. Lots of CRLFs where there should be an unbroken line. And it inserted the full title header at every page break, which is a lot because the original was a small pulp booklet.

I don't think I'll vote for the retros, I don't see a point. I actually had read most of them as a child. I have to say they are all worthy of a hugo had there been such a thing back then.

Nothing to do after lunch, so I watched a storm chaser in CO on Twitch on a little STB which got testing interrupted by the TV project.

Also brought a portable antenna from home and hooked it up to the non-test TV. I want to hang it from the ceiling but didn't want to get up on a ladder alone. Maybe Monday. Maybe I'll ask for help. Or not. Monday afternoon is pacemaker check and BP meter check.

And Tuesday is DMV appointment for a new Real®™ driver's license. It requires a bunch of ID, which I gathered together before I started writing. Passport, SS card, proof of residency (mortgage and rent bills) and of course current DL.

Got another contract job feeler, similar to what I'm doing now, only with more mobile devices. And six more which were either for medical devices or way far away.

Home, traffic was a mess because they had all the lights up to 101 flashing - totally insane. I was directed into a turn-only lane and had to fight to get two lanes over so I wasn't dumped onto 101 going the wrong way.

I got lucky at IFH and only had to wait for 3 cars to run the red light.

Got a phone call from the Ford service manager. I told him how it shouldn't take 4 hours to fix a flat. He was apologetic, but not proactive.

Online, entered my time in the new web site. Vastly improved. So simple I thought I did it wrong until it showed the form for submission. The old page needed time in, time out to lunch, time in from lunch and time out for the day. Then you had hit a copy button for each day. This one just wants time in and out for the whole day, and time in and out for lunch, then it can copy that to the whole week with one button.

I forgot to call B of A to find out where my $2k is. Tried to call middle sister but she was at a baseball game.

BP has been low and pulse high all day. Hgl has been good.

Delivered was a toy which took forever to arrive from China.

Ordered another 6 Jockey shorts.

Last night I walked through House of Beads but did not find anything to enclose my Thai amulets. A young person was taking up all the time of the one employee so I couldn't ask.

Watched PTI and some of a Comcast channel show called Happy Hour, football news. And one round of Match Game, which had the worst questions. But the best guests. Ice T, Christina Ricci and two well built blondes.

Spook has been out at the water and food in the kitchen, but still keeps hiding under the coffee table. She's getting bolder about it. Also saw her using the office litterbox.

Dinner was 5 each egg rolls and breaded fish portions. And some veggies. Tried to make a mango smoothie, but the mangoes were fermenting instead of ripening in the fridge over the past week +. Had to pour it all down the drain.

Took the chicken skins out of the freezer, may fry them up tomorrow.

Bought a supporting membership for next year's Worldcon, it's in Dublin, Ireland. Doubt if I'll go.

Plans for tomorrow:
Probably won't make the 2-hour slog to the garlic festival.
May catch Allen Funt's act at a downtown theater.
There probably will be a Fart & Whine Faire somewhere.
I need to take more photos.
