History Repeats

Let's hear it for now-former Gov. Eliot Spitzer, who kept tradition alive in New York:

Franklin Roosevelt had several affairs, including one with his wife's social secretary. He was Governor of New York 1928-32

W. Averell Harriman divorced his first wife** and then married Marie Norton Whitney, who left her husband to marry Harriman. NY Governor 1955-1958

Nelson Rockefeller divorced his first wife** to marry his lover "Happy". Rockefeller died making love to his mistress in 1979, while he was US Vice president. NY Governor 1959-73

Hugh Carey violated his religious beliefs by remarrying to a three-times divorced, but very wealthy woman in 1981. Carey endorsed Spitzer in his race for governor. NY Governor 1975-82

**At the time, the only grounds for divorce in NY State was adultery, proven (or admitted to) in court.

IMHO there's something seriously wrong in a country where a public servant can spend more on prostitutes during his time in office than the average American spends on automobiles in their lifetimes. $80,000 - that's a lot of nacho chips (thanks edith_mf)
